Fallout has always been that game where you can get lost in the wasteland late at night and be so intrigued you check the clock one minute and the time reads to you 9:30 PM and then the next time you look it reads 3 AM on a work/school night. Fallout 4 has gathered so much from it’s older siblings (Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas) and Bethesda may have almost perfected the art of a fantastic RPG. Fallout 3 was fantastic, I still can remember going to my birthday party for the first time 7 years ago when the overseer first handed me my pip-boy and wondering what the hell is this thing and what do I do with it? I remember encountering my first deathclaw on the way to find my father and running away in absolute terror. Fallout 4 has mastered many of the mechanics Fallout 3 and New Vegas had kind of failed to accomplish but still have left some in the dirt. Shooting any sort of weapon in Fallout 3 or New Vegas was damn near impossible without the V.A.T.S system and it feels almost too good that you can successfully kill almost any creature or person in the wasteland without it Fallout 4, that is in fact if you can aim down sights and kill someone without aim assist. I plan on keeping this review 100% spoiler free but I do want to say that Fallout 4 started off very well having you create your character before the nukes went off, kinda giving the Fallout franchise the back story we all knew and loved but never experienced first hand. Bethesda has also always done their graphics differently from every other company and I honestly think the graphics should be nobodies reason to not like a game, I find myself 72 hours deep into the game and I think it is beautiful besides for some of the face models. Fallout 4 is one of those key games where you can find yourself at level 21 and 18 hours deep and haven’t even started the main story quests yet, but with that being said Fallout 4’s main quests I was not a major fan of. Reasons to why I was not a huge fan is it felt wicked short and kinda icky it was all the same thing, kill these guys, build this, travel here, pick this lock, and unlock this terminal. That’s all okay though because the side quests and miscellaneous objectives and quests also feel like they have a purpose and they do not feel like they are there to just pass time and give you some XP so you can upgrade your perk system. I found myself 12 hours in and only doing Brotherhood of Steel side quests so I could get my level up but they got boring and repetitive really fast. The Perk System is so unique and huge in Fallout 4 you could honestly get lost into it, but that’s what happens when the game comes with no level cap and a huge open world. The world also was huge but still felt very small, it only takes 42 minutes to walk from one side of the world to the other which was very disappointing with how much bigger Skyrim was, like really Bethesda? The world gets progressively more dangerous the farther you walk south as well. Eventually you’ll encounter an area titled the glowing sea and even around the edge there is just a ton of Behemoths and Deathclaws for you to blow all of your ammo on, yesterday I fought a Legendary Alpha Deathclaw and it didn’t feel as intimidating as it should have at all. I threw a few Bull Barrelled .44 shots into it along with a Missile and 20 Alien Blaster Pistol rounds and the thing evaporated into mid air. Needless to say I was very very disappointed on how quick it died. Altogether though Fallout 4 is an amazing forerunner to Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas and I would recommend the game to anyone wanting to wander into the wasteland landing the game a solid 9.5 out of 10 from me.
