Curator Notes
Beyond the Beyond arrived in North America while the PlayStation was still proving that a CD-based console could carry long-form Japanese role-playing games beyond niche import channels. Camelot’s first PlayStation RPG reached Sony Computer Entertainment America’s shelves in 1996 after a 1995 Japanese release, placing it among the earliest works that taught this hardware what a multi-disc-era JRPG could look like in Western retail.
The filing is not kept because the game is widely remembered as a high point of the form. It is kept because the Original PlayStation collection needs evidence of that first wave — when SCEA published Camelot directly, when the black disc still felt new, and when the archive’s later Sony holdings had not yet begun.
This copy is preserved as a North American retail object from that opening chapter of the platform’s software library, not as a ranking against the JRPGs that followed it.

Acquired in August 2026 as part of beginning the Original PlayStation shelf beside the archive’s existing physical Sony holdings.
The retained copy is the North American PlayStation edition published by Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCUS-94702). It remains complete in box with manual and cover insert, and is kept as the reference copy for this filing.
